Tuckpointing and crown repair are far cheaper while there is already scaffolding and a crew on the roof. Doing it after the new roof is on means disturbing fresh flashing.

This is most common in homes built before about 1940. Pre-war construction — galvanized supply, cast iron drains, cloth-wrapped wiring, ungrounded circuits.
