Replace rather than repair when the shingles are curling generally, when there are multiple layers already, or when the decking is compromised. Age alone is not the test.

Tear-off costs more than an overlay and is the only version most manufacturers will warrant. On pre-1970 houses expect plank decking that needs overlaying with sheathing – that belongs in the quote, not as a change order once the old roof is off.
