Three-tab shingle is rated around twenty years and lies flat with cut tabs. Architectural shingle is thicker, dimensional, and rated twenty-five to thirty.
Those ratings assume adequate ventilation and ordinary weather. Full sun with no tree cover, a hot unventilated attic, or a history of hail will each pull the real figure well below the number on the wrapper — so treat the rating as a ceiling rather than an expectation.
The permit record usually gives the install date, and county assessor records are public. Failing that, granule loss in the gutters, curling edges and exposed mat are the signs that rated life has been reached regardless of what the paperwork says.
