A great many roofs carry unclaimed damage from a storm the owner never connected to their roof. Hail bruising is hard to see from the ground, so a hailstorm two summers ago can sit on a roof unnoticed until a leak appears. The NOAA storm events record will tell you what fell over your county and when, and most policies have a filing window running from the date of loss — so this is worth establishing rather than assuming.
This is most common in homes built roughly 1940 to 1980. Post-war and mid-century — copper supply, aging cast iron stacks, 60 to 100 amp panels, first-generation central air.
