“Never clean your gutters again” is a sales line, not a product feature. Before you buy, know what the guard will and won’t do, and whether you have the problem it solves. You can handle this one yourself. No call needed.

- Large trees overhang the roof
- You clean gutters several times a year
- Pine needles or seed pods are the main problem and the guard is rated for them

- Few or no trees near the roof
- Your gutters overflow from capacity, not debris
- The price is quoted as a lifetime “no-clean” system

3What maintenance still looks like
- Check the topLeaves, needles and seeds collect on the guard surface, especially on low-pitch roofs. Brush or blow them off.
- Check the outletsFine grit still reaches the downspout. Flush it with a hose once or twice a year.
- Lift a sectionLook inside once in a while. Sludge builds up under guards where you can’t see it.
- Watch a stormIf water sheets over the guard and the gutter, the guard is costing you capacity.
Guards don’t remove the need to go up a ladder. Read cleaning from a ladder alone before you check them.
4What drives the cost
Price depends on the guard type, the length of gutter, the height of the eave and whether the installer requires replacing your gutters too. Ask for the guard priced separately from any gutter work, and get the warranty terms in writing. A warranty against clogging usually covers less than the sales pitch suggests.

Do gutter guards stop ice dams?

Can I install guards myself?
Many snap-in or screw-on types are made for homeowners on single-storey eaves. Check that the guard won’t void a roof warranty by going under the shingles.
